Try scrumptious Japanese strawberries while in Japan

Japanese strawberries are firm, sweet and juicy. Their high quality makes them popular not only in Japan, but also abroad, and some brands such as Amao and Toshiotome are sold at high prices.

Strawberries were introduced to Japan from Europe in the 19th century and have been cultivated ever since. Over 258 varieties are now grown in Japan for cakes and other purposes, but we recommend eating them raw.

Between January and May, many farms and greenhouses in Japan let you pick and eat all the fresh strawberries you want within a certain period of time. This is a popular activity for tourists from overseas.

While visiting Japan, you can try delectable Japanese strawberries in sweets and buffet lunches at Taikoen in Osaka, or scrumptious cakes covered with strawberries at Hotel Chinzanso Tokyo and Hakone Kowakien.
