Tokyo’s favorite New Year’s destination. Forested Meiji Shrine.

Meiji Jingu, a beautiful Shinto shrine surrounded by a surprisingly deep forest in the middle of metropolitan Tokyo, attracts tourists from throughout Japan, as well as from abroad.

Built for Emperor Meiji in 1920, the shrine also features grounds with gardens, ponds and historical buildings. Kiyomasa's Well, a renowned sacred spot in one of the gardens, is believed to radiate positive energy. A pond covered with water lilies is also popular as a place to relax.

Every New Year’s holiday, about 3 million people visit Meiji Shrine for Hatsumode (the first shrine visit of the year). During this period, the usually quiet grounds become quite lively with visitors praying for safety, happiness and peace.

Three Fujita Kanko Group hotels in Shinjuku are only about 20 minutes away from Meiji Jingu by foot and train. Why not let our concierges help you plan an unforgettable New Year’s visit to Meiji Shrine!
