Autumn delicacy (saury)

In Japan, autumn is considered the best season for eating because many Japanese foods like rice, mushrooms, chestnuts, sweet potatoes and salmon are harvested then. Sauries are particularly associated with autumn because the Japanese kanji character for autumn is part of their name. These delicious fish have long been loved by Japanese and even made their way into a classic Rakugo story.

In autumn, sauries have flavorful fatty meat that melts in your mouth. They fatten themselves up during the summer north of Japan and travel southward in autumn and winter to lay eggs. They are most commonly enjoyed by grilling with salt, but are also delicious cooked with rice, simmered with condiments or eaten raw as sashimi or in sushi.

Sauries are also highly nutritious. In addition to protein, they contain generous amounts of EPA and DHA that help lower blood pressure and prevent arteriosclerosis.

Delicious and nutritious, sauries are extremely popular in Japan, where seasonal dishes are highly appreciated. When you come to Japan, be sure to arrive in time for the best tasting saury!
